Tightening the exhaust valve adjustments affects the valve timing, specifically advancing it. When the exhaust valves are adjusted to be tighter, it alters the timing at which the valves open and close. By advancing the valve timing, the exhaust valves will close sooner in relation to the position of the piston during its cycle. This can lead to an earlier release of exhaust gases from the combustion chamber.

Proper valve timing is crucial for optimal engine performance because it ensures that the exhaust gases are expelled efficiently, facilitating better airflow and improving the intake of the next air-fuel mixture. When the exhaust valve opens at the correct time, it can enhance the overall efficiency of the engine, leading to improved power output and responsiveness. Thus, tightening the exhaust valve adjustments can significantly impact the engine's operational characteristics by advancing the valve timing.
